Directora de cine india grabará película con corridas de toros. ¡Protesta ya!

La joven directora india Zoya Akhtar prepara un nuevo éxito para el cine Bollywood, la película Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (que se puede traducir como "Sólo se vive una vez"). La película contará con la actuación de tres actores famosos del cine hindi, Farhan Akhtar, Katrina Kaif y Hrithik Roshan, quienes encarnarán una historia sobre el afiatamiento de la relación entre tres amigos que viajan por diversos países mediterráneos. La película está actualmente en fase de preproducción.

La productora de la película, Excel Entertainment, declara: "Katrina está muy nerviosa; ella ama la aventura. Las corridas de toros son literalmente una danza con la muerte. El torero debe examinar y evaluar cada movimiento concienzudamente, así como la fuerza y los movimientos del toro. Un paso en falso y puede resultar seriamente herido".

I send this letter to manifest the indignation about the announcement of the bullfight friendly film Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara of the indian director Zoya Akhtar.

 

Bullfighting is an act that involves torture and kill of animals. Several different tools are used to torture the bulls; edged weapons that destroy nerves and blood vessels and tear muscles apart. After 15 minutes of blood, the animal is finished with an 80cm sword that penetrates its heart and lungs, making it drown in its own blood. Often, the torture does not end there and the animal is immobilized while its ears and tail are cut off as an award for the bullfighter. Finally, the bull is dragged outside the arena and dismembered at the Plaza’s slaughterhouse.

 

Each year 60,000 animals die; most of them (40,000) are bulls killed in this type of festivity, but they are not the only ones. Some others are thrown to the water and many drown (bous a la mar), they get their horns set on fire (toro embolado), tied (toros ensogados), thrown darts at (toro de Coria), thrown spears at (toro de la Vega), they celebrate novilladas (bullfights with calves) where bullfighting "aficionados" trained. In these and other shows of blood, tortures and death – often attended by children – adult participants also die. All this is financed with government funds, which cuts social expenditures while paying bullfighting and other celebrations involving bulls around 564 million euros a year.

 

Paradoxically, the majority of Spanish society is against provoking suffering in animals (72.1% is not interested in bullfighting, while only 7,4% supports it, according to the GALLUP survey 2006), and today we live at the peak of the abolitionist movement. There has been an increase in the number of cities that declare themselves “friends of animals”, and the associations call for mobilizations, round tables and all kinds of actions. Now we have a political group who is working to obtain parliamentary representation – PACMA (Partido Antitaurino Contra el Maltrato Animal) – to introduce the animal debate among legislators. Additionally, some media, radio, written and digital press, as well as a TV chain, are realizing that the decent stance is not to remain silent but to overcome traditions that are cruel to animals. In fact, in the autonomous community of Catalonia, the parliament is about to vote on a motion that will prohibit bullfights in all its territory, and the same initiative was sent yesterday to the parliament in Madrid.

 

For these reasons, we think that promoting these celebrations and glorifying them through cinema will only help to perpetuate the cruel torture and killing of animals in the name of tradition, and a people that perpetrates such cruelties cannot be civilized.
